About CapoeiraList

CapoeiraList is a place to find capoeira. The purpose of this website is to help capoeiristas find each other all over the world, collaborate, and play more capoeira! It's also here to help people who want to try or see capoeira find it near them.

What are Groups, Schools, and Rodas?

Schools are places where you can take capoeira classes. They have one or more locations where they offer capoeira instruction. Groups are larger organizations that are usually founded by a Mestre and can include multiple (sometimes many) schools. A group often has schools in different locations, sometimes all around the world, all of which share a similar style, cord system, and Mestre(s). Rodas are the heart of capoeira, where capoeiristas get together and play capoeira. This website is not directly listing rodas (for now), so if you're looking for open rodas to play in we advise you to use this site to find schools you're interested to play with, and use their contact info to contact them and inquire about open rodas. When going to visit other schools or groups, please remember to always talk to your Mestre or teacher about it before you go, and to always be respectful of the group you're visiting.

What's This Capoeira Thing?

From the English Wikipedia article on capoeira:
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance and music. It was created in Brazil mainly by descendants of African slaves with Brazilian native influences, probably beginning in the 16th century. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly power, speed, and leverage for leg sweeps.
